With everything going on and all the roles I play, sometimes I get lost. I get so caught up in what I’m doing, where I’m going, who I’m with, when to do that, why this happened, and etc. I can say that I’m rarely present in the moment. Being the opposite is so foreign to me. It’s tough for me to admit.
I’ve been playing with this idea of mindfulness. What’s mindfulness? Well, sunshine, I’m glad you asked. The Oxford Language dictionary says mindfulness is the following:
- the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something
- a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique
Another definition by Rob Nairn, states that mindfulness is knowing what is happening, while it is happening, without preference. Essentially pay direct attention to what thoughts, emotions, sensations, perceptions, and etc while they are happening in the moment. The key here is not to discriminate….treat it all the same.
I have to be honest here Sunshine, I find this difficult to understand and share. There are very few resources that weren’t attached to some sort of religious belief or cultural practice. Some attach meditation and some don’t. Unfortunately, I can’t really suggest much here. What I will say is this, make more of an effort to be present. Stop and smell the roses, literally. Put the phone done and enjoy the present instead of trying to capture the moment. So you won’t have a cute video or picture to post on social media. It’s okay, trust me, you won’t die.
